Loki Fish Company

Based in Seattle, Loki Fish Company is a handful of small-boat fishermen who were among the leaders in the fishing industry to bypass fish processors and market their catch directly to consumers. Each salmon they catch is bled, dressed, and immediately chilled in cold seawater holds. It’s then flash-frozen at their facility in Coffman Cove. Get to know this family and unique fleet of fishing vessels who are willing to sell a part of their catch directly to you. (If you live in the Seattle area, you might also consider joining their community-supported fishery program.)

How They Fish

More than just the fishermen, this company helps you connect with each of the fishing vessels that harvest your salmon. The original boat, F/V Loki, is a 38-foot Vestad gillnetter built in 1959 in New Westminster, BC. The latest addition to the fleet is a 46 foot fiberglass freezer troller out of Sitka, Alaska that fishes for king salmon, coho salmon, and tuna. Most of the salmon they sell is gillnetted. You can read more about each team member and fishing vessel on their website.

Quality and Sustainability

As a locally-sourced, fishermen-direct company, they meet and exceed the highest standards of quality and sustainability. Their Alaskan fishery is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. Most of their salmon comes from this Alaskan fishery and is clearly indicated as such. They also have a Puget Sound fishery that isn’t certified but harvests Keta salmon in a sustainable way.

Here’s where things get a little tricky: While the Puget Sound is too polluted to earn the highest certifications, Keta salmon live their entire adult lives in the ocean and typically spend 2-4 weeks or less in Puget Sound before being harvested. But again, this is just a portion of their Keta salmon supply. Most of their salmon comes from the Clarence Strait in Alaska.
